Multimedia journalists work to produce content across multiple platforms and to understand how to monitor and increase audience engagement for their work, according to Anthony Adornato. When news consumption is shifting to online platforms, news production must also. Across the country, newsrooms are now highlighting the need for journalists with "new school" skills to lead digital-first efforts. It is not enough to know how to write and edit, if you do not have the skills to produce and share that work with the greater audience via social media. lChanging technology and the advent of social media create a space for stories to be told in new and developing ways. These new platforms create the ability for conversation and engagement directly with the source, and a journalist must be able to adapt to these changes to produce the best stories and " lead the charge in shaping the future of journalism.
I see this new wave of journalism as a crucial piece of community engagement and relationship building, which are key to telling good and impactful stories. To me, journalism needs to be about the people, rooted in the desire to help highlight stories that have been silenced or kept away from mainstream media. Utilizing social media to build these connections helps break the divide between a journalist and their sources, which can help gain insights and vulnerabilities that otherwise may have been missed. It is the journalists job to act morally to best honor their story and their audiences.
With this new wave of journalism, what are the ethics surrounding social media use in a personal lens? Can a journalist use their personal social media to conduct journalism work? Should they separate the two- does that make them inauthentic? These are questions that journalists must contend with when entering the social media space. As a storyteller, you want to be able to connect with audiences and be a source of truth and authenticity, so how you curate a social media presence matters.
